Seasonal Prep: Getting Your Log Burner Ready for Spring

As the seasons shift, so do the needs of your wood burning stove. While winter is for enjoying the heat, the "shoulder seasons" of spring and autumn are the most critical times for maintenance. At The Living Fire Centre, we want to ensure your appliance remains a safe, efficient, and beautiful part of your home year-round.
Follow this seasonal guide to keep your stove in peak condition.

Spring: The Deep Clean and Inspection
When the final frost of the year passes, it is tempting to simply shut the stove door and forget about it. However, leaving ash and soot inside over the humid summer months can lead to corrosion.
Clear the Firebox: Remove all leftover ash and debris. Use a dedicated ash vacuum to get into the corners. Leaving a bed of ash is good for burning, but bad for storage as it attracts moisture.
Check the Seals: Inspect the fire rope around the door. If it feels hard or brittle, or if you can easily pull a piece of paper through the closed door, it is time for a replacement.
The Baffle Plate: Slide out the baffle (the heavy plate at the top of the firebox). Soot often collects here and can restrict airflow or cause damage if left uncleaned.
Leave the Door Ajar: During the summer, leave the stove door slightly cracked. This promotes airflow and prevents internal condensation that causes rust.
Why Efficiency Matters: The Ecodesign Advantage
If your current stove is more than ten years old, you might be losing significant heat up the chimney. Modern Ecodesign Ready stoves are engineered to burn wood more completely. These models can reduce particulate emissions by up to 90% compared to an open fire and 80% compared to older stoves.
Upgrading isn't just better for the environment; it is better for your wallet. High-efficiency stoves use fewer logs to produce the same amount of heat, meaning your wood pile lasts much longer throughout the winter.
